API Bentonite
API-grade bentonite is manufactured out of high-quality sodium bentonite clay that has been processed according to specific standards set by the American Petroleum Institute (API). API bentonite is also recognized for its good viscosity as well as its ability to expand significantly (swelling) and develop high strength (gel strength) when mixed with water, therefore making it one of the most common types of bentonite used in condenser/additive in drilling muds and/or drilling fluids.
API bentonite is essential for the following functions during drilling operations (both onshore and offshore): wellbore stability, suspending cuttings, lubricating the drill bit, cooling the drill bit, and preventing fluid loss from the wellbore.
